The Breed: The Norwegian Forest Cat.
We are not sure about the origin of the NFOs, but it seems that this cats sailed with the Vikings in order to maintain the ships saved from rodents.
The Norwegian Forest Cat appears in Scandinavian Mythology, and also in Legends and Children Tales.
The evolution helped this cat to adapt its body to the long cold winters: thick and long hair, with woolly undercoat and waterproof overcoat, and a big size that helps to survive in extreme cold habitats.
Today there are wild forest cats at Scandinavian forests and also at faros, were their preys are abundant. These cats are preserved in order to maintain the genetic diversity, may be one day these wild cats will be needed to introduce new blood to breeding NFOs.
During 1930 decade it started the NFO breeding program, in order to preserve the breed.
In 1972 the first standard was written. FIFe (Fédération Internationale Féline) recognised the breed in 1977. The standard model was the famous male Pan’s Truls, the first NFO that obtained a FIFe pedigree.
Under its wild look, the Norwegian Forest Cat has a sweet and lovely temper. This cat is very close with those that share its life. It’s called the cat-dog, for its social and playful behaviour with children, dogs, etc.
Today the Norwegian Forest Cat is one of the favourite breeds that people choose to share their life and have a great companion.
